How do I get into a good college after being in the military?

Right out of high school I wasn't able to afford going to college so I decided to join the military. Now that my contract is nearing it's end I would like to go to college now. I've noticed that most good colleges accept most of their students straight out of high school. What can I do to distinguish myself from these young high school students when I have been out of school for 4+ years? How do I get into a good college after being in the military? What you do to distinguish yourself is serve honorably in the military - that single checkbox (is a veteran) is sufficient to put you into an entirely different group of applications from those recent HS grads. If you're also over 25 years old then you're firmly into that other application pool.

You'll find that most colleges will rubber stamp your admissions application and that's all there is to it. They don't even look at your HS record (except to see if you have a diploma) or SAT/ACT scores. That's probably about 90% of all schools - you're just in that easy. The financial aid folks will have a different view though and you'll have to be more creative than the HS crowd with scholarship applications.

Among the other 10% are some that don't want you at all. Not because you're military but because you're not in the 17-23 age group they like to get. Those tend to be "13th grade" anyway (they serve as an extension of childhood for parents that can't stand the idea of their "baby" growing up - they function as a closed environment young adult daycare and are threatened by adults entering the camp; you might corrupt the babies.) so you'd not want to go there. You can identify these by the very high percentage of students that live at home with mom and dad.

The other group is the very highly selective elite schools that will be happy to consider your application but will hold you to the same standards for admission as their transfer applicants. You'll need some really good academic history for those.

The main reason you're an auto-accept at most colleges is because that military mindset is ideally suited to success in college. Military folks rarely consider missing class because they'd rather sleep-in an acceptable option, for example. The military minded don't turn in an assignment days after it was due, if it's due on Friday - it's in on Friday (or before). The additional time to be exposed to some 'real-world' also gives you a significant advantage in coursework. World geography makes a little more sense when you've actually "been there". Don't think you have a disadvantage by having been in the military.
