During the 11+ years of major combat in Vietnam, the US engaged in several major battles. Of these battles, how many did the US military objectively lose?
I've heard that the US never lost a battle it fought in Vietnam, but that seems highly unlikely given the high casualty rate. I would appreciate some clarity on the issue. Thanks! How many battles did the US military lose in Vietnam?NONE. and Nixon negotiated a peace treaty like the one for Korea.
But after he resigned the Democrats cut off funding to South Vietnam, signaling that the US would let this ally fall. How many battles did the US military lose in Vietnam?
None.
Overall, Vietnam casualty rates were low in the scheme of things. Yes they were higher then today's rates in Iraq and Afghanistan, but still far lower then those in World War II or Korea.
Also, when you look at the rates the enemy took it was small. In the end, the enemy was never able to hold ground. Experts believe that had the war continued, the North Vietnamese casualty rates would have won the war in somewhere around 3-5 more years, but the war was lost on political grounds, not military ones or casualty rates.
Also, just like in Iraq and Afghanistan, there were few instances where casualties out of any one engagement were high, it was small numbers over almost a decade.

Jimrose, we won KheSanh. The enemy never took the base. They were repulsed. It was a massive attack that failed in its operational objective. At the end of the battle, the Marines did not retreat and were still standing on KheSanh when the NVA retreated. It was costly, but it was a victory for the NVA and demonstrates why being stuck on defense sucks. I am also sure it didn't feel like a win for those who were there, more like survival. How many battles did the US military lose in Vietnam?we never lost a battle in Vietnam, The only reason the US lost was because we withdrew from there. The US won every battle but the North Vietnamese were willing to sacrifice many more lives than the USHow many battles did the US military lose in Vietnam?
We lost one Khe Sanh, but that was due to the Washington Politicians who wanted to run the war from Pennsylvania avenue.
We destroyed the viet cong and ARVN in the 68 Tet. But then Johnson called a truce so they could rebuild.
It was not a high casualty rate at all. Spread over those 11 years. Some clarity should show you that. It was nothing compared to Shorter wars, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Middle East.
Why is there no reference to the casualty rate of the N. Vietnamese? Why no reference to the casualty rate of the S. Vietnamese? Mainly because the S. Vietnamese rarely, if ever fought for their own country.
I saw it, I was there. How many battles did the US military lose in Vietnam? We won all the battles, but lost the war. One big problem was that we fought the battles right where and when the Vietnamese wanted us to fight them. They understood that the real way to victory was through media and popular opinion. Winning hearts and minds.
It has been said that Vietnam was like one side playing chess and the other playing go. The side playing go won the overall conflict.
This is why that when Bush decided to invade Iraq, that the press was carefully muzzled, children were not drafted to fight, and it was paid for with loans instead of taxes, all done to avoid voter backlash. How many battles did the US military lose in Vietnam?
What does the casualty rate have to do with winning or losing a battle and a "high casualty rate" compared to what exactly?
